Aqueous Phase from Hydrothermal Liquefaction: Composition and Toxicity Assessment

چکیده

The main obstacle to the widespread use of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) for waste and wet biomass recycling is formation a significant amount highly polluted wastewaters. This paper presents an analysis chemical composition toxicity aqueous phase from HTL (HTL-AP) primary secondary sludge. It was shown that HTL-AP has high level organic pollution (total carbon (TOC) = 4.2–9.6 g/dm3, oxygen demand (COD) 7.9–14.0 BOD5 6.0–8.1 g/dm3) biological traditional test organisms (so dilution ratio, ensuring death no more than 50% (DR50), varied within 64.7–142.2 44.9–81.7 Artemia salina Paramecium caudatum, respectively). An with NMR-spectroscopy method allowed us establish share in aliphatic chains 34.05–41.82% content carboxyl groups aromatic rings 26.42–34.44%. As result, we can conclude components are fatty carboxylic acids their derivatives, acids. aldehydes, ketones, lignin less 8%. Biological treatment lab-scale aerobic reactor turned out be successful, so average COD reduction 67–95%. Sludge industrial water plant (petrochemical sector) microorganism concentration 2.7 g/dm3 used as inoculum. HTP-AP diluted 1:10 tap water. duration process 18 h.

Microbial utilization of aqueous co-products from hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of algae biomass is a promising technology for the production of sustainable biofuels, but the non-oil, aqueous co-product of the process has only been examined to a limited extent. The aqueous phase from liquefaction of the alga Nannochloropsis oculata (AqAl) was used to make growth media for model heterotrophic microorganisms Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, and...

Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Bacteria and Yeast Monocultures

We hydrothermally treated monocultures of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae at isothermal (350 °C for 60 min) and fast (rapid heating for 1 min) liquefaction conditions. Fast hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of P. putida and S. cerevisiae produced the highest biocrude yields of 47 ± 13 and 48 ± 9 wt %, respectively. Biocrudes generated via fast...

Life-cycle assessment of transportation biofuels from hydrothermal liquefaction of forest residues in British Columbia

Background Biofuels from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of abundantly available forest residues in British Columbia (BC) can potentially make great contributions to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector. A life-cycle assessment was conducted to quantify the GHG emissions of a hypothetic 100 million liters per year HTL biofuel system in the Coast Region of BC....

Algal polycultures enhance coproduct recycling from hydrothermal liquefaction.

The aim of this study was to determine if polycultures of algae could enhance tolerance to aqueous-phase coproduct (ACP) from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of algal biomass to produce biocrude. The growth of algal monocultures and polycultures was characterized across a range ACP concentrations and sources. All of the monocultures were either killed or inhibited by 2% ACP, but polycultures of...

Hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass: developments from batch to continuous process.

This review describes the recent results in hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of biomass in continuous-flow processing systems. Although much has been published about batch reactor tests of biomass HTL, there is only limited information yet available on continuous-flow tests, which can provide a more reasonable basis for process design and scale-up for commercialization. High-moisture biomass fee...
